Varroa strategy in July · why timing is everything

Of all months in the beekeeper year, July is probably the most important for winter survival. Not because much happens in the hive · often quite the opposite · but because the choice you make now determines the health of your colony for the rest of the year.

The reason is simple: winter bees are born in August and September. If those bees are infected as larvae by varroa, they become weaker winter bees. Weak winter bees mean weak colonies in March · and by then any treatment is too late. The July approach determines whether your colonies survive.

This article covers three things: how to measure, which approach fits when, and what you should definitely not do.

First measure, then act

Every approach starts with knowing how much varroa you have. There are three standard methods:

  • Sticky board · place a board under the floor and count natural fall after 7 days. Rough estimate, but cheap.
  • Powdered sugar method · catch 300 bees in a jar, dust with powdered sugar, shake over a white cloth. More reliable, no bees die.
  • Alcohol wash · 300 bees in alcohol, bees die, exact count. Most reliable, but not everyone wants to kill bees for a measurement.

As a rule of thumb: more than 3 mites per 100 bees in July is a signal that action is needed. Below 2 you can often wait, but measure again in 2 weeks.

Option 1: Brood interruption with oxalic acid

Brood interruption has become popular in recent years, especially among hobby beekeepers with 1-5 colonies. The idea: lock the queen in a brood cage (for example Scalvini) where she cannot lay. After 21 to 24 days all existing brood cells have hatched. At that point all varroa is on the bees · no brood cells to hide in. Then treat with oxalic acid (trickling or vaporising), which gives 95-98% effectiveness.

Advantages:

  • Very high yield in one strike
  • No chemical residues in honey
  • Works independent of temperature

Disadvantages:

  • Colony shrinks temporarily (no new brood for 3+ weeks)
  • Requires practical experience with cages
  • Release timing is crucial

Who: suitable for beekeepers with at least 2 years of experience who can inspect carefully.

Option 2: Formic acid without brood interruption

Formic acid (60-70%) works differently: it penetrates the wax layer of brood cells and kills varroa both on bees and in sealed brood. That is unique among treatments · others reach only mites on the bees themselves.

The classic method is the Nassenheider floor evaporator or MAQS strips. Administration 2 to 3 times in summer, each time 3-5 days.

Advantages:

  • No intervention in the brood schedule
  • Effective against varroa in sealed brood
  • No chemical residues

Disadvantages:

  • Temperature-sensitive (15-25°C ideal, above 30°C harmful to colony)
  • Can kill the queen with wrong use
  • Stronger smell, less pleasant to handle

Who: good for beekeepers who do not want to intervene in the colony and are attentive to weather conditions.

Option 3: Powdered sugar as intermediate solution

Regular powdered sugar treatments (every 5-7 days, 3-4 times) lower varroa pressure without chemicals. Effectiveness alone is 40-60% · too little as primary approach, but suitable as supplement or to buy time until your main treatment starts.

Use this if:

  • You measure too little varroa for a big action but too much to ignore
  • Supplement alongside another treatment
  • Never as sole approach with infection above 3%

The sequence many beekeepers follow

1.End of June / early July: measure. Sticky board or powdered sugar.

2.If elevated infection: choose brood interruption or formic acid and start within 2 weeks.

3.Mid-August: measure again. If effect is insufficient, second round of formic acid.

4.September: give winter feed once all treatments are done.

5.December (smallest bee cluster): trickle oxalic acid for winter residual treatment.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting too long to measure. If you only measure in August, you are often too late to save winter bees.
  • Combining without a plan. For example starting brood interruption and then halfway using formic acid "just to be sure". That is counterproductive.
  • Formic acid at too high temperature. Above 30°C it becomes really dangerous for your colony. Always check the 3-day weather forecast.
  • Forgetting that brood interruption weakens the colony. Feed during interruption if needed.
  • Relying only on natural bottom fall. Natural fall often lies. Measure again with another method if in doubt.

The thinking behind it

People often talk about varroa as if it is a fight · exterminate the mites. That is a misconception. You will never get varroa out of a healthy colony. What you can do: keep pressure under the threshold at which the colony survives and produces healthy winter bees. That threshold is lower than most beginners think.

Good beekeepers do not do one thing perfectly · they do multiple things well enough, measure regularly, and adjust their approach to what they see. That is the core.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start varroa treatment?

Measurement determines the answer. Rule of thumb: more than 3 mites per 100 bees in July = act within 2 weeks. Below 2 mites you can wait and measure again in 2 weeks.

What is brood interruption and does it work?

Brood interruption is temporarily locking up the queen (usually 21-24 days) so no new brood comes. Afterwards all varroa is on the bees and can be treated with oxalic acid at 95-98% effectiveness. More work and temporary colony shrinkage.

Is formic acid still effective?
