Math for beekeepers: it is all counting, whether you realise it or not
The difference between a beginning beekeeper and an experienced beekeeper is not experience with bees. It is math.
An experienced beekeeper does lightning-fast calculations behind their eyes during every inspection. "I see eggs, so the queen was here three days ago." "This queen cell is capped today, so a queen will emerge in eight days, so I have to be back before then." "This colony has been queenless for two weeks, so we have at most seven days to do something before it really goes wrong."
For someone just starting, this sounds like something you have to learn by osmosis. You do not. The math of a bee colony is simpler than you think, and once you have it in your head, you look at a frame completely differently. In this article I lay out the numbers you really need.
The core schedule: 3, 8, 16, 21 and 24
Everything in a bee colony revolves around five numbers. Remember these, and you have 80 percent of the math down.
Worker bee (the regular bee):
- Day 0: queen lays the egg
- Day 3: egg hatches, larva appears
- Day 9: cell is capped (now it is a pupa)
- Day 21: young bee emerges from the cell
Queen:
- Day 0: egg laid in queen cell
- Day 3: larva appears
- Day 8: cell is capped
- Day 16: young queen emerges
Drone (male):
- Day 0: egg
- Day 3: larva
- Day 9-10: cell capped
- Day 24: drone emerges
Remember especially: 3 is always the time it takes an egg to develop into a larva. For worker, queen and drone alike. From there they diverge.
Reading eggs: what does it tell you about your queen?
Here comes the first superpower. What you see in a hive in terms of brood tells you where the queen is, or even was.
- Eggs visible: your queen has laid in the past three days. She is alive, she is in the hive.
- No eggs, but young open larvae: queen is at most a few days gone, but the colony can still raise a new queen from those larvae.
- No eggs, no open larvae, only capped brood: queen has been gone at least 9 days. The colony cannot make a new queen from existing brood anymore.
- No brood at all: queen has been gone at least 21 days, or has never laid.
One minute looking carefully at a frame thus gives you a fairly precise timeline of what has happened.
Breaking queen cells: when is it too late?
Breaking queen cells is the bread-and-butter work in May. But timing is everything.
Open cell (day 3-8 after the egg): breaking is OK, but watch out. The colony can still build new cells from young larvae. If you break cells without also solving the swarming urge (by splitting or giving space), they just build new ones.
Capped cell (day 8 or later): this is the critical moment. The queen in this cell will emerge in at most 8 days. But more importantly: once the first cell is capped, the old queen can leave at any moment with a swarm. Often on the first nice afternoon afterwards.
So if during an inspection you see capped cells and the queen is still on a frame: you do not have days, you have hours. Take action that afternoon, not tomorrow.
Personal experience: I once thought "it will not be that urgent, a day more or less does not matter." The next day I was too late. I could have kicked myself when I arrived at the hive and saw the swarm had already left. A capped queen cell is not a suggestion of timing. It is a countdown clock.
Queenless? Calculate backwards
Suppose: you open the hive and see no eggs and no open larvae. Only capped brood. What do you do?
First calculate:
- No eggs = queen at least 3 days gone
- No open larvae = queen at least 9 days gone
- Capped brood present = queen less than 21 days gone
So queenlessness started between 9 and 21 days ago. That has practical consequences:
If less than 9 days ago (young larvae still present), the colony can build a new queen itself from a 1-3 day old larva. Give them rest, check in 7-10 days for emergency cells.
If more than 9 days ago, the colony cannot make a queen from existing brood anymore. Then your options are:
- Give a frame with fresh brood (eggs and young larvae) from another colony. The receiving colony will make an emergency cell from it.
- Introduce a mated queen (from a breeder or fellow beekeeper).
- Unite with another colony.
Time presses: from day 21 the oldest workers die without replacement. From day 30 workers may start laying eggs themselves (only unfertilised, so only drones). A colony with laying workers is almost impossible to save.
Making a new queen: how long does it take?
Suppose your colony is queenless and has young larvae. You let them make a queen themselves. How long until it lays eggs again?
- Day 0: old queen disappeared
- Day 0-2: workers select 1-3 day old larvae and build emergency cells
- Day 8: emergency cells capped
- Day 16: young queen emerges
- Day 18-23: she walks around, eats honey, becomes sexually mature
- Day 23-25: mating flights (depending on the weather)
- Day 25-30: she starts laying
Count on at least 3 weeks from queenlessness to new eggs. In practice often 4 weeks, especially if the weather is bad. During that period no new workers are born, so the colony shrinks every day.
If you have that schedule in your head, you understand why it is important to diagnose quickly. Acting one week earlier can be the difference between a healthy colony in July and one that does not survive winter.
How much honey can you expect?
A strong colony in summer has about 50,000 bees, of which 30,000 are foragers.
The calculation in top flow (linden, rapeseed, clover):
- One forager collects about 1 gram of nectar per day (over 8-10 trips)
- 30,000 foragers x 1 gram = 30 kg nectar per day, theoretically
- Nectar is 80 percent water, honey is 18 percent water
- So 30 kg nectar becomes about 6 kg honey
That is the theoretical top. In practice during a really good linden season you see peaks of 1-3 kg per day per hive. Not 6. Reality factors in foraging distance, weather, and the time bees need to evaporate water from nectar.
Per whole year in the Netherlands: an average strong colony delivers 20-40 kg honey in a good year. In a bad year 5-15 kg.
For winter: how much sugar?
In the Netherlands a colony needs 12-15 kg of sugar to survive winter. Why exactly this number?
- A winter cluster consumes about 50 grams of sugar per day in real cold weather
- Five months winter x 30 days x 50 grams = 7.5 kg minimum
- Plus build-up phase in March and April (colony starts brooding again, consumption shoots up)
- Plus safety margin because you do not know
Hence 12-15 kg. If you give 8 kg "because it seems like a lot", you really risk your colony starving in March while nothing is blooming outside yet.
Wax: how much honey does building a frame cost?
Bees produce 1 kg of wax for every 7-10 kg of honey they consume. An empty Dadant frame becomes about 140 grams of wax. So every new frame they build "costs" you about 1 kg honey-equivalent.
Practical consequence: if in May you place an empty honey super and hope for fast nectar income, it is smart to put in at least a few drawn-out frames instead of just foundation. Otherwise the bees spend energy on building that they could also have used to make honey.
Finally
The math does not replace experience or intuition. But it makes it easier to see the patterns. An experienced beekeeper does not consciously calculate anymore, they just know: "this cell is from last week, so I will come back in 3 days." But that "knowing" is just internalised math.
Honest confession: I have no single spectacular blunder for you. I have many small things that almost did not go right, and looking at them from a distance, they almost all come down to one thing: I could have seen it coming if I had paid more attention in math class. Not that they taught us anything about bees there, but they did teach us: counting, looking ahead, estimating consequences. Beekeeping is in many ways just the math class you regretted not taking more seriously.
For the beginner: write the numbers down somewhere. On a note inside your hive lid, or on your phone. 3, 8, 16, 21, 24. And especially that 3, which keeps coming back.
